Why We Started Answers for Senior Care

As the owners of Answers for Senior Care, we have lived in Aurora, Colorado, where we have enjoyed raising our family of five children in the Denver community. Living locally, we have been able to make valuable connections that we bring into our partnership with families and their loved ones.

In 2006, Lily’s mom, Nelly, took a fall and broke a vertebrae in her lower back. Suffering from osteoporosis, this was the beginning of a 6-month battle with many twists and turns. At the same time, Lily’s dad was suffering from beginning stages of dementia making bad choices with irrational behavior but we didn’t know or understand the disease and our time was stressed and overwhelmed. With two parents needing help and guidance through the healthcare system and children and jobs to deal with, we are a classic example of the “sandwich generation” namely, taking care of parents and children at the same time.

At the time we were working through these challenges understanding healthcare, we were raising our kids whose ages were 7, 9, 10, 18, and 20.

With hundreds of options to consider, we were overwhelmed and didn’t have a clue where to begin. Our journey included educating ourselves in many areas such as legal (Power of Attorney), insurance, skilled nursing, in-home care, memory care, rehab, and many other moving pieces of care requirements. Looking back, we wish we would have had a company to rely on for guidance like Answers for Senior Care.

Phil Hotaling
Owner/Family Consultant

“I started Answers for Senior Care in 2014, with my wife Lily. We had experienced the challenges of finding the appropriate living and care solutions for her parents and we wanted to make sure that other families had a trusted, professional resource to help them find solutions. When a client is connected with the right services and care based off my recommendations, I feel fulfilled knowing that I’m helping families just like mine.”

~ Phil

After spending most of his career in the technology industry providing hardware and software solutions for corporate clients, Phil ventured into the Senior Care Industry after personal experiences attempting to find care for his in-laws. Being new to the industry, Phil took the Administrator’s training program to familiarize himself with the rules/laws for Assisted Living Residences in Colorado. Phil became a speaker and educator with the Alzheimer’s Association to help educate families about dementia and available resources to help them better cope with the disease. Phil is a founding board member of CoPRA (Colorado Placement Referral Alliance), the local chapter of NPRA. CoPRA is a professional organization established to define and adhere to a Code of Ethics, Best Practices & Education for placement agencies. Phil is a member of the Government Relations Committee and works with a team of like-minded professionals protecting seniors and the laws that affect them.

Lily Hotaling, BS, CMC
Geriatric Care Manager

“I understand the stress and overwhelm that occurs when parents need additional care. I have experienced this with the care of my own parents, including being the power of attorney for my mother’s last year of life. My goal is to use my professional expertise and personal experience to help your family get the highest quality care available and to help reduce the stress of caring for your loved one.”

~ Lily

Lily Hotaling BS, CMC, has a Bachelor’s degree in Public Health/Health Education from California State University at Northridge, and a graduate certificate in Geriatric Care Management from the University of Florida. She is a member of the Aging Life Care Association. She has been working as a nationally certified care manager since 2012 and Lily founded Answers for Senior Care in 2014. She also serves as an educational speaker for the Alzheimer’s Association and facilitates two caregiver support groups.

As a powerful advocate for her elderly clients, who may not have an immediate family support structure or have families who are juggling competing priorities of their own, she focuses her passion by working tirelessly to provide seniors and their families the right resources to navigate the often complex senior living experience. Lily firmly believes that our elders should be treated with respect and dignity and deserve the highest quality of life while living in their own home or in a retirement community.

While very proud of her career, Lily’s greatest achievement is her family. She has been married for over 40 years and has been blessed with five beautiful children and two granddaughters. She enjoys spending time with her family, hiking, and gardening.
